The Statute of the Municipality of Scanno, approved on February 23, 2001, concerning the protection, preservation, and promotion of traditional women’s attire, interpreting the will and sentiment of the people of Scanno, states: \u201cthe costume is worthy of protection as it is unique in the world; admired nationally and internationally for its austerity and evocative charm, a sublime inspiration for many artists, it represents one of the most powerful symbols of the Scanno community in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
The Foundation intends to apply the message contained in the Statute of the Municipality of Scanno while respecting the town’s cultural and social substrate, in order to implement processes to enhance all its aspects. Foremost among these are the artisanal knowledge and high-level tailoring skills derived from the good practices related to the manufacturing of the attire and its accessories (pleating of woolen fabrics, the art of wool processing, the art of pillow lace making, and goldsmithing). The Foundation aims to achieve this goal without losing sight of the social capital embedded within the attire, which is built upon shared rules and a devotion to the daily and continuous wearing of this clothing.<\/p>\n\n
The primary international cultural milestone that the Foundation aims to achieve is the inscription of Scanno’s traditional women’s attire\u2014along with the cultural codes, artisanal knowledge, and tailoring skills it embodies\u2014onto the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Foundation views this recognition as the most effective and motivating driving force, capable of providing both active support for the promotion of the entire local socio-economic system and fruitful assistance to guarantee historical continuity, its role in defining identity, and generational transmission to the culture of Scanno, and more broadly of Abruzzo, as well as opening up a cultural dialogue at national and international levels for fruitful sustainable development.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
